SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Mrs. F. W. Wild presided at the monthly meeting of the Plunket Society of Te Aroha. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the bank of £58 12/1. The nurse's report was:—Attendance at rooms, adults 175; babies . 157; older children, 30; home visits, 41.

A concert was given at Tuakau by Mrs. Rattray and company, of Auckland, in aid of the Presbyterian Church. The following contributed to the programme: Mesdames Rattray, Kersey, Missa« Thompson, Fergus, Messrs. Duncan Black, Miller, Martin and J. McDougali.

A concert was given in Knox Hall, Birdwood Crescent, Parnell, on Tuesday evening in aid of Sunday school funds. Items were rendered by Miss Rita Mac: Cullay,'Mrs. Williams, Miss E. B. Paterson, and the pupils of the Sunday cchool. The accompanists were Misses E. B. Paterson, Rene Smith and Violet White.

A hridge afternoon was given on Tuesday by Mrs. Stanley Morrison at the Farmers' tearooms to bid bon voyage to Mrs. S. S. Scott, of Mount Hobson Road, Remuera, who is leaving for an extended holiday in Australia. Among the players who made up' the tables were: Mesdames Shade, Rowe, McCarthy, Nelson, Scott, Chapman, Thompson, Swanston, Denton, Brady, Smith, Pollock, Morrison, Misses Hayward, Griffen and Evans.

A branch of the women's division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was formed by Mrs. C. K. Wilson at Te Kuiti on. Tuesday. Mrs. Wilson mentioned that the branch at Piopio had recently launched a "Use More Wool" campaign. This would materially assist the woolgrowers. An exchange mart had been established at which farm products are sold to buy wool for this purpose. Quite recently a spinning machine had been secured and many are now taking lessons in spinning to enable them to use the wool straight from the sheep's back. Kirby's Hall, Onehunga, presented an animated appearance on Wednesday afternoon and evening, when a bazaar, under the auspices of the Ladies' Guild, was held in aid of the Merrilands Hall building fund. The proceedings were formally opened at 2.30 p.m. by the Mayor of Onehunga, Mr. E. Morton. The room-was tastefully decorated with bamboo, punga fern, gaily-coloured balloons, ribbons and streamers. Musical items and competitions were enjoyed. The stalls were: Clothing, fancy goods, produce, sweets and toys. A somewhat novel feature was that all admission tickets were redeemable in goods. The following were the committee: Mesdames Yockney (president), Knights (vice-pre-sident), Gilchrist (secretary), Jackson and Wright.

Mrs. R. Brooke Taylor, Xew Lynn, gave a farewell party to Mr. and Mrs. A. Brooke Taylor, who are returning to Hawke's -Bay, after spending the months since the earthquake in Auckland, and to celebrate the 80th birthday of Mr. Brooke Taylor. The lounge and drawing room were gay with spring flowers, in a colour scheme of blue and gold. The hostess wore flowered ninon in shades of gold and brown. Mrs. A. Brooke Taylor wore grey crepe de chine, with black .panne velvet coatee. During the afternoon Mrs. J. A. Parry sang. Among the guests were: Mesdames George Lawson, Salmon, George Severne, R. O. Gardner, J. A. Parry, C. T. Gardner, Rankin, Warren Beharrell, Rudman, Leightcn, A. Neilson, Misses Rudman, Mary Severue, Esther Rankin and L. and K. Gardner.

A afternoon was given at the Penwoman's Club rooms on Saturday by the pupils of Miss M. T>. Haresnape, assisted with songs by Miss Myrtle Burns, and elocutionary, items by the Misses D. and B. Messer," Mavis Addison and Patty McLaughlan. The performers were Misses Mavis Gracie, Elsa and Nora Pool, Minnie and Grace Kendall, Elaine Macdougall, Esme Sorenson, Avis Taylor, Molly Kneebone, May Vautier, Nancy Hughes,"Elvie Morris, and Owen Cossey, Jack Crippen and Malcolm Macdougall. Afternoon tea-was served after the performance.^

An enjoyable evening was given by Mrs. A. j/Prentice at her home, Rangiora Avenue, One Tree Hill, on Wednesday evening in honour of Miss Dorothea Taylor, whose marriage to Mr. Harold Locke takes place shortly. During the evening items were given- by Misses Doreen D'Authreau, Gladys Ryan, Marjorie Faire, Cynthia Lambert and Noni Wright, Messrs. L. Keven, H. Locke, H. Jones and "The Snappy Three." Mrs. Prcnrice received her guests wearing a frock of apricot georgette and ecru lace. Amongst those present were: Mesdames G. Poulton, Hayhow, Freeman, Misses D. D'Authreau, M. Faire, N. Wright, L. Taylor, I. Musket, G. Ryan, Hayhow, I. Hill, I. Pascoe, W. Hill, H. Johnson, and C, Lambert.

A social to assist the work of St. George's Anglican Ladies' Guild was held in the St. George's Church Hall, Papatoetoe, on Tuesday evening. The president of the guild,* Mrs. T. H. C. Partridge, was in charge of the programme, which consisted of games, competitions and items. Mr. Ray Jury gave a xylophone solo, and Miss Elsie Thomas vocal solos. A novelty item in the form of a whistling solo was given by Mr.. Rusher. Tlie stallholders .were:—Mesdameri T. R. Smytheman, 0. Kaynor, Burrill, P. Wyman, T. Richards, Miss Gane and Miss K. Kimpton. The supper was "in the hands of Mesdames J. J. Trimble, Henderson, Fisher, D. Burnside, Miss Watson and Miss Runciman.

At the Symbndsville Studio on Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Bellam, Mount Eden, entertained their friends to celebrate the coming ox age of their daughter Anne. The rooms were gaily decorated, and blue irises and delicate Iceland poppies were iised on the supper tables. Dancing and cards enabled everyone to spend a very enjoyable time. During the evening Mr. Cyril Towsey played "Waltz in C Sharp Minor" (Chopin). Miss Doris Messer gave an amusing little sketch entitled "The Wedding," and Mr. Reg. Morgan sang "Pale Moon." A bridge party in aid of the Myers Kindergarten was held yesterday at the Tudor Reception Hall, and was an outstanding success. The hall and a large portion of the Tudor Tearoom was occupied by the players. Mrs. Hugh Kirker wore a deep cherry crepe de chine coat and skirt, relieved with small lemon silk jabot and a satin straw hat to tone; Mrs. H. M. Buchanan wore a navy blue and white pin spot tailored suit, white vest and navy blue straw hat. Priiies were won by Mesdames John Dawson and Gavegan. The committee present were Mesdames J. C. The members of the Ellerslie Girls' Friendly Society presented "Robin Hood" to a packed house in the Public Hall, Otaliuhu, last Tuesday njght. The play, which has enjoyed a splendid fun of success wherever it has been presented, was produced by Mrs. E. •Schmitt. The role of Robin Hood was taken by Mrs. Beryl Prentice, Gladys Evan (Richard the Lion Heart), Elsie Meredith (Lady Digby), Winifred Hall (Sir John Digby), Marion Smith (Friar Tuck), Doris East (Gregor), Ina Williamson (Will Scarlet), Lila Bond (Alan-a-daie). Mavis Thomas (William), Katherine Pounsett (Little John), Hazel Johnson (Prunella), Eva Stares (Marian), Mary Brown (Mutch the Miller), Myra Keesimg and Thelma Bond (pages). The acting also included solos, duets., choruses aid dance songs. The evening was arranged by the Holy Trinity Church, Otalmhu, and at the conclusion, the Rev. R. J. Stanton thanked the players for their performances.

Miss Booth, who is president of the Auckland centre, explained the aims of the club, to create fellow feeling and help in the training of voun" "iris. Items were rendered by the Epsom Methodist Bible Class,-Avon-dale Girls' Club, Miss Marjorie Young, Miss Bettv Ryan, Miss Joll, "Miss Edna Beeves, Y.W.C.A. girls, Mr. Eldon Black, Baptist Bible Class and Methodist Bible Class.

The Mount Eden branch of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary held its annual meeting on Tuesday night at the residence of Mrs. E. H. Potter. Mrs. Kidd took the chair and Mrs. T. McNab, Mayoress, was the guest of honour. The following officers were elected:— Patroness, Mrs. T. McNab; president, Mrs. E. H. Potter; vice-president, Mrs. Deveraux; organiser, Mrs. E. H. Potter; secretary. Miss Slijro; treasurer, Mrs. Cowie; charge of depot, Mrs. Sheldon; charge of district visiting, Mrs. Hooton; charge of badges, Mrs. Coz; convener ways and means committee, Mrs. Watson. Mrs. Kidd congratulated the committee on their report and balance-sheet. Sister Mulcock said a few words in regard to the T.B. cases. Items of dancing were given by little Miss Tremaine and music by Miss and Master MacGregor, after which suppsr was served.
