OBITUARY.
MR. W. A. CARRUTH. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Monday. One of the best-known residents of the town and one of its most familiar figures passed away suddenly yesterday in the person of Mr. W. A. Carruth. He had been in town on Saturday and was in good health and spirits. Mr. Carruth was born at Papatoetoe 71 years ago. His father was Mr, John Carruth, a wellknown . farmer. He was educated at Colonel Grant's private school at Papatoetoe and afterwards attended the Auckland Grammar School. He then studied law and was articled to Mr. W. Thorne, solicitor, of Auckland. In 1882 he came to Whangarei and opened a legal office, later going into partnership with his principal, the firm being known as Thorne and Carruth. From that time till he died Mr. Carruth was an outstanding figure in the legal world. Some years ago he took his eon, Mr. H. G. Carruth, into partnership. For 37 years Mr. Carruth was a member of the Board of Governors of the High School and for eleven years was chairman. For many years Mr. Carruth was solicitor to the borough council and the city council and he was associated with the legal work of other local bodies. Though a New Zealander by birth, he was a keen Caledonian, having great love for Scotland and the Scottish people. He was one of the prominent members and president for many years of the original Philharmonic Society and was a strong sup- j porter of athletic sports of all kinds. Mr.i Carruth was a devoted member 6f the) Presbyterian Church. A widow and family of one daughter, Miss Nellie Carruth. and two sons, Messrs. H. G. and W. A. Carruth, are left. MRS. MONTY STERLING. PAPAROA, Monday. Mrs. Monty Sterling passed away in the Whangarei Hospital on Saturday, after a fortnight's illness. She was a daughter of Mr. R. S. Hodgson, of Ruawai. The intermen't took place at Papa--roa. ________ j MR. C. B. HARPER'S FUNERAL. WAIHI, Monday. The funeral of the late Mr. C. B. Harper took place yesterday afternoon, and v-as largely attended by representatives of the Waihi Borough Council, the Waihi Mining Company, the Miners' Union, and the Waihi and Waikino Druids. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Mcl*arlane, and the Druids' service by the lodge secretary, Mr. Kowe.
