THEFT OF IRON.
FROM FARM AT WIRI. LABOURER FINED £5. The theft of a quantity of roofing iron, valued at £1 15/, belonging to Louis Marks, at Wiri, on June 9. was brought against Edward Clarence Wilton (40), a labourer, at the Police Court to-day. Accused, for whom Mr. Noble appeared, pleaded guilty. On June 9, said Detective-Sergeant Kelly, a motor lorry was observed to pull up near Mr. Marks' farm at Wiri. Accused and another man were seen to take 20 sheets of iron and place it on the lorry. When questioned by a man accused explained that he had been engaged by the other man to pick up the iron. It was Wilton's lorry that was used.
"Wilton seems to have made an effort to go straight during the last 10 years," said counsel. "He is a married man with a family, and if given a chance I think it will be a lesson to him."
Wilton was fined £5 or one month's imprisonment.
A factory owned by Mr. J. Aitehison, shop-fitter and cabinetmaker, in Scotland Street, Ponsonby, was slightly damaged by fire shortly after 7 p.m. on Saturday. The bxiilding was unoccupied at the time. The flames were suppressed by the City and Ponsoaby brigades.
