Action to Curb Oil Production
In Texas.
GOVERNOR CLOSES WELLS
NEW YORK, August 16
Martial law reigns on the Texas oilfields. The State Governor, Mr. Sterling, has followed the advice of the Governor of Oklahoma, Mr. W. H. Murray ("Alfalfa Bill"), who found that the only wa" to check production was to call out the" militia and 'lose thousands of wells.
This resulted in an increase in price, which so far ie only slight, but "Alfalfa Bill's" chance of obtaining the Democrat nomination for the Presidential election received a great stimulus.
CHEAP ELECTRICITY.
SCHEMES IN BRITAIN.

RUGBY, August 16.
The Central Electricity Board _ announces the adoption of an electricity, scheme for South Scotland as prepared by the electricity commissioners. Thi9 is one of the area schemes under the 1926 Act to provide by the grid system a cheap supply of electricity to towns and villages all over Britain at a total estimated cost of £29,000,000. ,
Only North Scotland remains to be surveyed. Electricity derived from the great water-power resources in Galloway will be chiefly utilised in the neighbouring areas of Central Scotland and the north-west of England, for which schemes have been approved.
