CONFERENCE ON DERATING,

The Whangarei County Council yesterday received a tender of £3556 for the tar-sealing of abou 1 , three miles of the Whangare'-Maungatapere highway. Gooseman and Company were the successful tenderers.

The result of the theory of . muaic examination and of the Associated Board of. the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music, London, held in Whangarei on June 20, are as follow:—Harmony, higher division, honourable mention: Amy Cook, Eileen Edna Doel. Harmony, lower division, distinction: Mary Selwyn Wiggins. Harmony, lower division pass: Vera M. Campbell. Rudiments of music, pass: Hanna Segan. Grammar of music, division three, pass: Norman Arthur Hilk, Freda Robina Lacy, Juinata A. R. Wenzlick. Grammar of music,'position one, pass: Eileen Mary Puckey, Esm'e Roosmond Puckey. In respect to the MaungatapereKaigoose Road the Whangarei County Council decided yesterday to take certain lands under the Public Works Act as the owner was not willing to allow the road to pass through. The Whangarei County Council some time ago asked for a grant outside the ordinary county allocation for the metalling and formation-of Keay's deviation. Yesterday the Minister of Public Works replied that he had received the petition signed by 35 settlers in respect to the matter and would look into it with a view to seeing what action could be taken.
