ROTARY WELCOME.
VISITORS FROM CHILE.
NEW ZEALAND FLAG PRESENTED.
Among the visitors at the Auckland Rotary Club's weekly luncheon meeting held to-day in Milne and Choyce's reception hall were Commander Alvarez and a number of officers from the Chilian training ship General Baquedano. As they arrived in the hall, the visitors were greeted with the Chilian National Anthem, played by Rotarian Ma ugh an Barnett. The guests were then introduced by Mr. E. A. Craig, the Chilian Consul. After a cordial welcome had been extended, the club president, Rotarian "Harry" Goldie, presented the commander, on behalf of the members, with a New Zealand Ensign flag and stated that a letter containing fraternal greetings had been sent to the Arauco Rotary Club in Chile.
Other visitors were:—Messrs. M. Angus (Christchurch), C. H. Chessell and L_ T. Trembatb (Whangarei), D. W. and H. Peters (Xapicr), R. Fairchild (Sydney), and T. Newman (Nelson). The speaker of the day was the Rev. R. C. TToberte, who discoursed on the trend of affairs in Russia and also upon "tendencies in modern business." In regard to the latter, Mr. Roberts deprecated movements which tended towards the complete mechanisation of industry. Fie said he was a great advocate of the lights of the small man in business and for the preservation of the human side in the conduct of manufacturing concerns. The email business man, he said had really built up the British Empire and big business would undermine it if we were not careful. A good deal could bo said for rationalisation and modernisation, but in practice the results were usually quite different from the objects aimed at. Impersonal oversight and administration could never replace the personal.
In moving the vote of thanks, Eotariau David Robertson said that in criticising big business the speaker had touched upon a highly controversial subject
