EXTRA GROUND CHARGE.

AUCKLAND LEAGUE ACTION. When the question of staging Northland's challenge for the Northern Union Cup was before the Auckland Rugby League last evening, the Northland delegate, Mr. E. Stallworthy, had a brief passage witli the chairman, Mr. George Rhodes, who had referred to the trophy a.s being of little value to Auckland, adding chat it was the New Zealand Council which should assist the outside leagues. The funds should not be a charge on Auckland. After the North Island selector, Mi. McClymont, had pointed out that if the fixture was not arranged immediately here, Northland intended to play the match in the Waikato, Messrs. Rukutai and J. W. Probert supported the application to use Carlaw Park on August 22, and this was carried. When the last speaker suggested that a 10 per cent extra charge be imposed in view of the sacrifice of the Auckland League of its club fixtures for that date, Mr. Rhodes supported this. Mr. Stallworthly rose and heatedly stated that he would rather withdraw Northland's application than submit to such unsportsmanlike treatment of a sister league. Further, if necessary, he would take steps to publish all the facts. It would be unjust to impose extra charge upon the Northland League. That should not be the spirit. The proper course was to ask the New Zealand Council to remit its share. Upon Mr. Probert's assurance that that was what was intended, Mr. Stallworthy made a retraction of his earlier remark. Mr. Rhodes said other members might be satisfied, but he would not accept the withdrawal. That ended the matter.
