BAGS OF SILVER.

TOTAL OF £1016 SEIZED. IN AUSTRALIAN FLORINS. HOW WAS IT LANDED? ' The money seized by Chief-Detective Hammond and Detective McWhirter yesterday afternoon when they searched a wardrobe in a city hotel, was counted by Mr. Hammond last evening: and totalled £101(3 in Australian silver. The woman who occupied the bedroom at the hotel was arrested on a charge of importing into New Zealand £500 in silver coin, contrary to the Order-in-Council recently gazetted. The money was contained in ten large canvas bags, which were so heavy that the detectives could not carry more than two at a time. ' This large sum of Australian currency is at present in the safe at the detective office. The florins are done up in neat thick paper bundles of £2 each, and the packets are inscribed with the name of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. In addition t<^ the silver, there are a number of New Zealand banknotes. Chief-Detective Hammond stated this morning that so far the police have not discovered how so much money was brought off the Mamma, assuming that the bass were brought by the woman arrested, when she arrived here last Tuesday from' Sydney. On Wednesday afternoon, William Bennett McGregor, a mill hand, aged 52, who appeared in Court yesterday and was remanded on a charge of being in possession £."32 in silver coin, is alleged to have been detected changing Australian silver coin into banknotes. The police allege that when McGregor was intercepted, another man, believed to be a confederate, changed £30 in .Australian silver coin in an adjacent fish shop.
