SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH.
LECTURE BY PROFESSOR WORLEY,
Certain revolutionising theories in connection / with scientific research were explained by Professor F. P. Worley, professor of chemistry at the Auckland University College, in a lecture on Tuesday on " Drones Among the Chemical Elements." . A new scientific era, he said, dawned m the 'nineties, with the discovery of important elements, and there was a possibility of further discoveries. Among the great discoverers Professor Worley mentioned Lord Eayleigh and Sir William Ramsay, who added argon to the list or known elements. A gas that was of great importance because of its extreme hglitness was found and named helium. Lord. Rutherford established that it came from radium and also determined its nature. It was now believed that helium was produced only from radio-active substances. I/rofessor Worley also dealt with tne composition of ordinary air, which contained, besides nitrogen and oxygen, a small percentage of argon. 1 here were also small traces of neon, helium, kr JP r °° and xenon. Lantern slides were used illustrate the lectWe.
