CROQUET.

DEVONPORT CLUB. Some few weeks a?:o a deputation of ladies, representative of tlie croquet players of Devonport, waited on the council with the request for assistance in the laying down of a new playing area. For some years the club used ground contiguous to the Bowling Club's greens. Owing to the increasing popularity of the game, there is now congestion. The croquet club asked the coimcil for a section of land near to the Takapuna Jockey Club's stables, and also sought help in the laying down of four full-sized lawns. While the council was sympathetic with the request, it had no money available for the purpose, but suggested that if the ladies provided the capital cost the council would have the land surveyed, and carry out the work in conjunction with the. No. 5 scheme. The ladies did not allow their enthusiasm to wane, but promptly set to work and raised the estimated sum set. down by Mr. A. T. Griffiths, borough engineer. The ladies have raised the amount required of over £400, included in the sum being a donation of substantial amounts by lady players, and a donation of U. 100 from the Bowling Club. The facts were brought under the notice of the Mayor, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, last evening, who has promised to support the proposed work being proceeded with without delay. The vacation of the present lawns will permit the Bowling Club extending their greens as need arises.
