SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Domain Kiosk was a scene of gaiety last Saturday evening 1 , when Mr. and Mrs. H. Barnaby, of Grange Road, Mount Eden, entertained relatives and friends to celebrate the 21st birthday of their elder son Neville. Dancing and musical items were enjoyed, and after the cutting of the cake a large golden key was presented, later being autographed by those present. Mrs. Barnaby received, wearing rose pink shot taffeta, with silver bridge coat.

An enjoyable entertainment arranged by Mr. George Barnes was given at the Evelyn Firth Home last evening. Violin solos* were contributed bv Misses Cutand Johnson, and Messrs. J. Dree, A. ""Wright and G. Barnes. Miss Grant Cowen was accompanist. Elocutionary items were given by Miss E. Hall and Messrs. Dan Flood and Tom Harris. Mrs. A. J. Dreavers Maori troupe gave Maori songs and hakas. and Mr. A. Gracie violin solos. At the conclusion ol the evening the visitors were entertained by the matron at supper.

A combined social afternoon and farewell to Mrs. J. Cowling, of Papatoetoe,; a former president of the Papatoetoe Methodist Ladies' Social League, was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. Brown, Wallace Road, Papatoetoe, yesterday. Mrs. Brown and Mrs. E. Farrand were the hostesses. Mrs. Cowling, who was leaving the district, after being a member of the league for vears, was presented with a handbag. Mrs. McKenzie, president, referred to valuable work done by Mrs. Cowling in the interests of the church. During the afternoon pianoforte solos were played by Miss D. Hughson.

A conversazione was held by the Papatoetoe Literary, Debating and Dramatic Society in the Renown Hall, Papatoetoe, last evening. The programme included flag bridge and dancinf. Prizes for the card competition? were won by Misses M. Polkinghorn and D. Grinter and Mr. R. O'Hara. A bidden number prize was won by Mr. Shii ley Snelling. Among those present were: — Mesdames H. The first annual meeting of the Papatoetoe branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Methodist Hall, Papatoetoe, yesterday afternoon. Mrs. F. H. Leonard, president, assisted by Mrs. T. H. Eccersall, secretary of the Otahulm branch of the union, presided. The programme included a pianoforte duet by Mrs. R. Ross and Miss R. Burnside, songs by Mrs. Penman and Miss McMeelian, violin solo by Master George Redshaw, violin solo hy the Rev. A. Carr, and elocutionary items by Mrs. Eccersall and Miss Z. Richards. A birthday cake, provided by the secretary, Mrs. J. Redshaw, was cut by the president, Mrs. E. Farrand. Mrs. W. Brown and Mrs. F. McDonald presided over afternoon tea.

The monthly meeting of the Auckland Home Service Association was held yesterday in the clubrooms of the Y.W.C.A. The president, Mrs. J. T. F. Mitchell, was in the chair. The Mayoress, Mrs. G. W. Hutchison, was welcomed as patroness. The committee present were: Mesdames John Cook, T. Derrick, N. P. Williamson, Martin Ross, John Gilbert-, J. J. Kingston, C. J. Kirk, J. M. D. Heather, Cuthbert McCaw, W. Gunn, G. S. Cammell, G. S. Radley, Misses M. Mac Donald and B. Carnachan. A dance, arranged by the committee, is to be held at the Peter Pan Cabaret on August 13. The Mayor and Mayoress have signified their intention of being present. Miss Mary Mitchell is acting as secretary for the dance. Mrs. C. S. McCallum, a new member of the committee, has kindly consented to represent the association in the Manurewa and surrounding districts. Mrs. Williamson's report showed that the progress of the association was most satisfactory, and that there is still a great demand for reliable helpers.

A pleasant time was spent on Monday evening in the Mount Albert Bowling pavilion, when the members of the Mount Albert Croquet Club held a social evening with cards and. dancing combined. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mies P. Edwards and partner. The winners of the cards were: Bridge, Mr. Waddington, and. the 500, Mrs. A. P. Smith and Mr. Watson. The monthly meeting of the Takapuna branch of the League of Mothers wis held on Tuesday afternoon in St. Peter's Parish Hall, Mrs. J. Thompson presiding. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. M. A. English, who chose for her subject a description of the Passion Play as performed at Oberammergau. Mrs. English was on a holiday tour, which included America, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and included the Passion Play, which is performed every ten years in Bavaria. Mrs. English gave a vivid description, first of her experiences in getting there and then of the play itself and its effect on the thousands that witness it. Members present were: Mesdames J. A successful old-time dance was held in St. Michael's Parish Hall at Belmont 011 Tuesday night. It was arranged by Messrs. Clark and Eaton and the ladies' committee. Buckley's Orchestra, which gave its services for the benefit of the general church fund, played excellent old-time music. The hall and stage decorations were the work of Mr. C. Eaton. The Otahuhu ladies' branch of the United party held a very successful bridge and 500 evening in the Kingsford Hall? Otahuhu, last night. The hostess, Miss McGee, received in a frock of black flora 1 chiffon, with bridge coat. The winners of the bridge contest were Mrs. Anderson. Miss Lawes and Messrs C. Ryan and L. Ryan, while Meedames Allansoii, Goodwin and Doyle were the successful players in the 500 tournament. The monthly meeting of the Society of Arts Sketch Club was held in the elubrooms on Tuesday evening. _ Members were addressed by Mr. F. X. Barnford on methods of improving the composition of pictures by the rendering oi action and study of tone values. The speaker cited the Japanese as being ex ponents of the art of painting in the -flat," without any attempt at the "roundness" which characterised the work of most painters in other countries and ■which had been fostered bj lliu Dutch school. The speaker also desci ibed how "flat" painting could be used to depict "speed" in moving objects, and how "roundness" tended to give a sense of immobility to figures.
