There are certain creatures which never feel the pangs of thirst; they are so constituted that dripk is unnecessary to them, and they never swallow a drop of water. Among these animals are certain gazelles of the Far East and the llamas of Patagonia. The Derby course is one mile four furlongs in length; that of the Grand National four miles three furlongs 196 yards; and that of the &t. Leger one mile six furlongs 132 yards. Steve Donogliue won the Derby six times. This not only constitutes a record, but was also the only man "who won it three times successively—in 1921, 1922, and 1923.
