FINE AT WHANGAREI.
"OVERSIGHT," SAYS DEFENDANT.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WHANGAREI, this day.
Samuel Mann was proceeded against at the Whangarei Magistrate's Court this morning, on a charge of defaulting for more than one month in the payment of an instalment of the unemployment levy, due on March l f 1931. Mr. Hopper, for the Department, said that the December instalment had been paid, but the next one was overdue. Whilst not suggesting that defendant was endeavouring to evade payment, it was essential that payment should.be prompt. Cases such as this were all a charge against the unemployment funds. Defendant said the non-payment had been an oversight.
The magistrate, Mr. G. N". Morris, im* posed a fine of £2 and costs 10/.
