TAUMARUNUI RACES.

MEETING AT ELLERSLIE

TE HOIA WINS BIG HANDICAP. TETBARCHATE TAKES SPPJNT EVENT. The Tauniarunui Racing Club's winter meeting opened at Ellerslie on Saturday, and will be concluded to-day. The weather was fine, and there v/as a fair attendance. The sum of £19,375 10/ was put through the totalisator, but as there was no corresponding meeting last year a comparison cannot be made. The going was heavy. The Steeplechase. Billy Boy, who had annexed the Hurdles early in the afternoon, was the only scratching from the Waituhi Steeplechase, and Town Beauty vra.3 made a solid favourite, carrying £682. Second choice was Quineilia ( £393), and Mashoor carried £355, the winner, Day Lark, being entrusted with £257. Arapawa lost his rider at the first fence, and Quineilia fell. Day Lark led up the hill from Town Beauty and Eoyal Visitor. Day Lark was in front racing up the hill the last time from Town Beauty, Day Lark, Royal Visitor and Mashoor. Town Beauty jumped to the front at the first fence on top of the hill and led down the incline and over the stone wall from Day Lark, Royal Visitor end St. Lucas. Day Lark had no difficulty in heading Town Beauty in the run to the post and won by three lengths, with Royal Visitor ten lengths <tway. St. Lucas and Mashoor followed.

Another For Gray. The Owhanga Handicap, in which the course were Grand Talk and King's Archer, provided a good finish. The favourite was Grand Spirit ( £793), with good money for Taurua ( £595), and Red Lion ( £593). Red Lion began quickest from Wee Prince, Taurua and Sub-editor. Along the back Red Lion was showing the way to Sub-editor, Wee Prince, Grand Spirit, Taurua and Claremore. Grand Spirit had moved into second place crossing the top behind Red Lion, with Sub-editor, Clareiuore, Indolent and Taurua following. Red Lion was first into straight from Grand Spirit and Sub-editor, with Wee Prince, Claromore, and Taurua following. Maintaining his advantage, Red Lion went on to win by three-quarters of a length from Grand Spirit and Subeditor, who dead-heated for second place. Taurua was fourth, followed by Wee Prince, Claremore and Excella Tea. Favourite Wins.

In the Rnngaroa Handicap all but Hampton Park went to the post, Tetrarchate bcins made a solid favourite with £1071. Full Measure ( £746) was second choice, and Ruffles ( £696) next. Full Measure's backers were unlucky, as the horse was turned sideways on when the barrier went up, and he lost the best part of 50yds. Paifflee was first out from Flying Prince, Tetrarchate, Bennie and Cynthia N. Across the top Pxuffles still led from Flying Prince, Bennie, Tetrarchate and Cynthia X., with Full Measure making up ground fast after being hopelessly out of it.
