SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

There was a large attendance at the monthly At Home of the Overseas League on Friday. . An interesting account of her visit to the Passion Play at Oberammagau was given by Mrs. S. O. English. An enjoyable violin solo was contributed by Mrs. Scott-Shaw. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the house, committee. * * ♦ ♦ A surprise party was taken to the home of Mrs. George Shorland, Grafton, on Saturday evening to celebrate her birthday. Bridge and dancing were enjoyed. Mrs. Shorland wore shell pink taffeta and georgette. Amongst those present were: Mesdames C. ElsemereDowden, Frank Preston and Misses Rex Foley, Flora Shenkin, May Shenkin, Molly Wooleott, M. Simmonds, Alison Cookii and Koa.

The Y.W.C.A. Women's Progressive Club held their usual meeting on Thursday evening at the social rooms, Y.W.C.A., when the president, Mrs. Fergusson, was in the chair. The speaker, Nurse Milnes, gave an interesting talk on her work and travels among the people of China and Japan. The members accorded her a hearty vote .of thanks, and the evening closed with supper. The hostesses .were Mesdames Reid, Robson and McGullivury.

The women's meeting in connection with the Presbyterian Social Service Association was held in the Edinburgh Street Hall on Thursday afternoon under the direction of Sister Esther and Sister Olive. There was an attendance of 220 women* Mr. Mains, of St. Helier's, gave a gospel address, Miss Bissett acted as song leader, with Miss Patterson at the piano. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of Mount Albert Presbyterian Church. A jumble stall sale precedes the service to defray the expenses of the afternoon lea. - * * • ♦

The Apache Club's ballroom in the Kitchener Hall has recently been decorated in a Venetian design, and on Saturday evening the room was filled with patrons, whose delight and interest in their unique surroundings continued unabated till the close of a delightful evening. The Monte Carlo prizes were distributed, and the winners of the handkerchief and boudor eatchets were pleased with "their gifts. The club orchestra played in their usual fine style, receiving applause. Their rendering of the novelty number, "It's An Old' Spanish Custom," gained v them a spirited ovation and added still further to their laurels.

The first of a series of social evenings arranged by "The Grange" Golf Club, was held in the club rooms, Great South Road, Papatoetoe, oh Saturday. There were seventy guests present. Golden wattle and violets provided' the attractive decoration. Progressive bridge and 500 competitions were held, prizes being won by the following: Bridge, Miss H. Parton and Mr. P. Swaffield; 500 prizes, Miss A. Whyte and Mr. W. Cotton. Musical items were given by .Mrs. R. Moffatt and ■ Professor Leo. Mr. Rex Yates gave elocutionary items. The hostesses were Mrs. W. W. Maesey, whose frock was of black ninon with gold, and' Mrs. S. W. House, who wore blue crepe de chine. They were assisted by Mrs. W. McNeely, in navy and fawn jersey velour, Miss H. Percy, cyclamen shot taffeta, Miss M. Clarke, primrose and Miss B. Wyllie, autumn floral ninon. Among the guests were: Mesdames G. Currie, P. Swaffield, Mofatt, E.. Stevens, Burnand, H. One of the Athenian Club's most popular dances and social gatherings was given at the Operatic Society's Hall on Saturday evening, when Mr. Percy! Dawes, invited the guests to "A Farm Dance on Our Selection." The stage was set as a farmyard, poultry showing among the sheaves of corn, a cow shed, slip rails, with scarlet poppies and stooks of straw, and the host was dressed as a jolly farmer, with a number of yokels. The programme was supplied by Messrs. Fred Burke and John Smith, *as the dancing pony; Mr. Alan McElwain, impersonations of a farm yard; Wendy and Ernest Luks, farm ditties, at the piano, and by Mr. and Mrs. Tollerton. The visitors were given favours, feathered and straw hats, baskets filled with eggs, corn cobs and all kinds of farm produce. The orchestra, which were dressed in smocks, and large straw- hats, supplied some bright new dance airs. The president and Mrs. Wilfred Wright, the latter in a black ninon, heavily sequinned, In gold beads, helped to receive the guests. Among those present were: Mesdames F. Williams, F. Mrs. T. Charter presided over a large attendance, when the Waimauku branch of the League of Mothers held their usual meeting on Wednesday afternoon in the Waimauku Hall. A motion was passed that the members of this branch of the League of Mothers each contribute a child's garment to the Auckland City Mission. It was also decided to hold a competition for the most novel and useful. garment for a child, made of material costing nothing. Two prizes were given for this purpose. An address was given by Mrs. Charter on "Christian Faith," in which the speaker emphasised the helpfulness of our Christian faith in the present social and economic situation. During the afternoon a further demonstration on moccasin making' was given by Mrs. C. Jackson. The hostesses were Mesdames G. T. Boakes, C. Robbins and A. Hamilton.

The Otahuhu Public Hall was thronged with three hundred dancers last Saturday evening, when a successful dance was held by the Otahuhu Old Time Dance Club. The hall was tastefully decorated with coloured streamers, balloons and bells, and excellent music was supplied by two orchestras. The opening overture was played by Mr. C. E. Jameson's Hawaiian Band. Two Monte Carlo waltz competitions were held, the winner of the first being Mrs. Dryson and Mr. J. Woods and Sirs. Watson and Mr. J. Parker, the successful couples in the second being Miss Shorock and Mr. J. Parker and Mrs. J. Kitto and Mr. H. Hudson. The balloon dance was won by Miss Walker and Mr. McLaughjan. During the evening Miss Kay Brown danced a Hula dance. Supper was served by the club's dance committee. Among those present were:—Mesdames H. Carr, J. Kitto, C. Turner, H. Whittle, G. Webber, J. The annual hospital dance was held at Opotiki on Wednesday night in the" Lyric Hall. There was a large attendance. The hall was decorated with greenery and a profusion of coloured lights.
