STRONG PROTEST.

AUCKLAND FOULTRYMEN. SALE OF BRAN.AND POLLARD. , A strong protest against the action of the Customs Department in issuing an order to all merchants importing Australian bran and pollard, decreeing that they shall not sell these lines direct to those engaged in poultry or pig raising, but only to other merchants or retailers, is being made by the Auckland Provincial Council of the New Zealand Poultry Association. The council states that at the same time the Department imposed a dumping duty equal to the amount saved through the favourable rate of exchange operating between Australia and New Zealand, so that poultry and pig raisers could not benefit by this favourable circumstance. In imposing the dumping duty, the council contended, the Customs Department was depriving the country of the benefits to be gained from dutyfree offals for stock feeding. When the council made representations for a reduction of the duty on British imported wheat, the Government told poultry keepers to substitute more of the offals which were duty free. The council could not sec why the Government should override the decision of Parliament in that matter. The effect of the decree, the council stated, , was to increase the handling charges on stock foods and to subject them to duplicated profits. The council strongly protested against what they described as being taxed unjustly to provide profits for other sections of the community.
