STREET OUTLETS.

BELGIUM STREET SCHEME. NEED OF VISION URGED. PETITION TO CITY COUNCIL. A largely signed petition will be presented to the Auckland City Council on Thursday evening, urging that the question of the Belgium Street outlet should be carefully considered. In the petition it is urged that a proposed building at the corner of Karangahape Road and Belgium Street should be set back at least 15ft. The recommendation of the Town Planning Committee of the City Council is that it should be set back 6ft. The former city engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush, recommended that the buildings in this locality should be set back 24ft, in view of the probable future development of Belgium Street as a traffic outlet. The petitioners urge that before finality is reached every possibility in connection with future expansion of the city should be examined. BUSINESS MEN'S VIEW. OPPOSED TO TUNNEL SCHEME. The application to the City Council for a permit to rebuild a block of shops on the corner of Belgium Street and Karangahape Road was considered by a largely-attended special meeting of the executive of the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Society to-day. The executive was informed that a petition was in circulation in Queen: Street and Karangahape Road in support of the widening of the corner. After considerable discussion, the following resolution was carried unanimously:— "That with reference to a petition that has been circulated supporting the widening of the corner of Belgium Street and Karangahape Road by setting back the proposed new buildings for a distance of 15ft, this society offers no objection to the proposal for the purposes of public safety, but if this is to be part of a general scheme to run trams down Belgium Street, the Karangahape Road Society, whilst not seriously opposed to it as such, are of opinion that the Arch Hill bridge scheme demands prior consideration as a solution of our traffic outlet problems, and that in any case the Karangahape Road business men are definitely and strongly opposed to the scheme of tunnelling under Karangahape Road to Belgium Street; and that the City Council and other interested bodies be advised of this resolution."
