HOCKEY.

SHORE BEAT 'VARSITY. MOUNT EDEN AND ST. LUKE'S DRAW. WESLEY HOLD SOMERVILLE. On a rough ground at Western Springs a close ' struggle eventuated between Mount Eden and St. Luke's. After both teams had fought strenuously under trying conditions, the game resulted in a draw, each side scoring a goal in the first spell. In. the second spell, Mount Eden failed to utilise some golden opportunities. North Shore, leaders in the competition, gained a most decisive victory over University, who played one short. A fast and exciting game at Kemuera resulted in a drawn game, of one goal each, between Somerville and Wesley.

SHORE V. UNIVERSITY.

Varsity were first to movefi, but Storry checked his es-clubmates at the twentyfive. Another advance was sent to the boundary by Allen. A free-hit enabled Shore to advance, both Raid, and Penman striving to break through. A pass from Anthony gave Haggett a shot, but. Crawley was in the way. Frater sent Reia away, but the ball drifted across field, and Blair relieved. Cross passing gave Shore a footing in the circle, and Reid sent a terrific shot into the goal. Shore 1, University 0. Another attack saw Haggett shoot unsuccessfully. Brown intercepted a hit from Monteith. but the greens were soon back again and Haggett scored. North Shore 2, Univorsity 0* Maintaining the pressure, Wilson sent Penman away, but a free-hit saved the students. A miss by Allen enabled Varsity to atack, and from a corner Bay .shot, but Anthony's hand was in the way. Bay made a good opening from Blair's hit, but mishit, and Allen cleared. Rushing play to the other end, Haggett put the ballover the net into the gully. University initiated a movement and reached the Shore twentyfive after some: short hitting. Shore served up several attacks, Wilson sending the ball into the circle and eventually scoring. North Shore 3, University 0 University rallied and- advanced along the left flank, headed by Bestic,. buu the latter dallied, and Shore again goalhunted. A hot shot by Anthony was well stopped by Crawley. Broun hit to Bay, but he hit over the ball and then eent put to Bestic. From the roll-in Shore attacked strongly, and Reid ran into the circle and SC °ln ed "the second spell Shore were first awav and from a long centre by Monteith, Haggett lifted the ball past the net. However, another sortie terminated In Anthony sending to Penman, who did the trick. North Shore 5, University .8. After a brief respite Shore again penetrated the students' defence, Haggett scoring. North Shore 6, University 0. From a twenty-five bully Penman had no difficulty in gaining the circle and scored without almost any opposition. North Shore 7, University 0. endeavouring to reach the circle. However, Allen sent them back, and Reid drove hard to Crawley and also sent the rebound against the side of the net. From the bully Bay, Broun and Bestic looked dangerous, but Broun held on too long. 'Varsity started to knock the ball more freely, but the attacks were short lived and Haggett almost got through, followed by Reid shooting hard and high, but it was left to Penman to find the net. North Shore S, University 0. Further, pressure saw Haggett net. North Shore 9. University O. Just before time was called an- attack by 'Varsity saw Bestic shoot and Bay, following in, secured the students' opjy goal. North Shore 9 University 1

WESLEY V. SOMERVILLE.

From the right Seccombe centred and lleet in clearing gave sticks. The penalty corner was intercepted and Wesley cleared, advancing up the left till Gardner stopped and Smith cleared. The whites again attacked, Seccombe's shot being taken in the pads by Cooper. McNab got the rebound but shot wide. A good run by Slaney took Wesley to the circle. Butler saved a hard shot, and a free hit eased Somcrville. Still the greens pressed and gained a corner, but Somerville cleared. A fine run ended in Voss reaching the circle and Butler conceded a penalty corner. No score resulted. The whites took up a series of attacks, Hunter finishing with a shot that Cooper kicked clear. A counter-attack by Wesley ended in Hayson missing the net. Another good attack by Wesley ended in Chappell hitting wide of the net. Half-time sounded without score. Opening the second half Somerville attacked, a prolonged onslaught ending in Glanville hitting tho side of the net. Voss retaliated with a run to the whites' circle, but Smith cleared. Back came the whites, headed by Seceombe, and McNab receiving netted. Somerville 1, Wesley 0. Surman led an. attack for the greens, but hesitation by the inner forwards lost a fine chance. Again the greens attacked, a centre from the right being accepted by Hayson, who netted. Somerville 1, Wesley 1. Play now became very fast, and changed ends rapidly. An accident to Fleet held up play for a while, and upon resuming, Wesley attacked, but Glanville came back and cleared. Somerville then returned to the attack, and kept Wesley penned down for some time. In the' closing stages Wesley pressed hard, and Avent close to scoring. MOUNT EDEN V. ST. LUKE'S. After play had gravitated between, the two tAventy-iives, Brown broke away, and centring, Grace hit the side ot" the net. Mount Eden responded and Hedges, after struggling hard for possession, lost to Grace. A weak hit by Mainland set Mount Eden in motion, and working up lield Fletcher sent across the circle, and M. Jones hit the ball into the corner of the net. Mount Eden 1, St. Luke's 0. St. Luke's gradually forced Mount Eden back, and from close work in the circle the browna were cornered. Mount Eden renewed the attack, and Chaplin's shot cornered St. Luke's. From a free hit Burnett and Grace led St. Luke's towards the other goal, where Torbet missed a fairly easy chance. Hard hitting changed the scene of operations frequently, and from an attack by St. Luke's Grace's shot missed. Mount Eden took up the running, and the St. Luke's backs experienced a lot of trouble from tho loose sorties of the Eden forwards. Williams came to the rescue, and a free hit further improved, but Davis and Logan sent them bacs, and St. Luke's were forced. Brown and Burnett made progr.'iss, only to be intercepted by Hedges. Then a telling rush headed by Torbet took St. Luke's into the circle, where Brown's running shot was stopped, but he succeeded with the follow on. St. Luke's 1, Mount Eden 1.

The game reopened in a shower of rain, making (he ground even more treacherous. St. Luke's were first to move, but Eden worked play back to foreign territory. Gaining a little freedom, the red vangiuu'd invaded Mt. Eden's quarters, but Mainland returned, and during the ensuing play Brown was compelled to retire owing to «n injury to the eye. When the game resumed Stuart attempted to score from an acute angle, but Vail cleared. Stuart centred and a scrimmage resulted. Mt. Eden cleared, and from a free-hit a shot from Chaplin missed. A St. Luke's invasion was countered by Wellbourne and Fletcher taking the ball upfleld. A run by Jdnes produced a fast but misdirected shot. Play proceeded to the other end, where Brodie served up a couple of nice centres. Mainland' and Logan shifted the danger, and Mt. Eden goal-hunted again. Wellbourne endeavoured to shoot, but was blocked. Another sortie saw Chaplin's shot blocked by E\ Clark. Grace gained 'ground on the left, and following good work by Robertson- cornered Mt. Eden. Mt. Eden worked the leather away from the goal and a free-hit gave Chaplin an opening, but he missed a good opporttintly. Brown, who returned, Avith Stuart speeded up field. Mt. Eden got away again and the St. Luke's goal had a marvellous escape. Wattam stopped a hot shot from Chaplin and a free-hit relieved a tense, situation, but Mainland returned.
