FELL FROM WHARF.
YOTTNG MAN AT NORTHCOTE. , ' RESCUED BY FERRY. Considerable excitement was caused on the Northcote ferry this morning, when a young man, Mr. W. Brooker, of Queen Street, Northcote, missed his step and fell from the wharf into the harbour. ■'.••■ When the ferry was about 50' yards from the shore, it was seen that the man had overbalanced and fallen from the wharf into" the water. The boat immediately stood by. The tide was running out strongly and Mr. Brooker began to drift rapidly away from the wharf. A life belt was thrown from the wharf, but the current was too swift for a fully-clothed man to swim against it. When the captain of the ferry saw the swimmer would not,be. able to reach the belt, he put back and picked him up. The mate gave him some dry clothing and put him in his room, where it was warm. When he had been picked up, crowds of heads disappeared from the side of the ferry and the voyage to town was resumed..
