" During' the -"last twelve" months more than £6000 has been raised for improvements at State schools,' by local contribution. This fact is mentioned in the annual report of the chairman of the Auckland Education Board, Mr. A. Burns, who said the board regretted but fully recognised the circumstances which : had necessitated the. curtailment of subsidies on voluntary 1 ' contributions, andtrusted tha.t the - withdrawal ' of subsidies would "be only a-temporary'ex-pedient, a.nd that - they would: 'be reinstated at "the earliest possible date! The board considered that the spirit of self-help evinced- during the past years by the very "' -generous contributions made.'by-parents throughout the district should ho fully-encouraged. / _
