TROUT FISHING.

EARLY "RUNS" IN PROGRESS. SPLENDID FISH SEEN. WORK AT THE HATCHERIES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA, Wednesday. In conversation with a "Star ' representative to-day. Mr. W. E. Kean, conservator of fish and game, said there were indications of a splendid fishing season. The main hatcheries at Tongarira are in full swing, and the available stafi is being kept exceptionally busy. The "runs" of fish from Lake Taupo have been fully three weeks earlier this year, a fine class of fish is being handled, and "stripping" results are entirely satisfactory. Work at tlie Rotorua Hatcheries will commence next week, and the same good reports are to hand from these waters. Good runs have occurred in all tributary, streams, and some exceptionally fine fish have been seen around the Green Lake. Last year there was no "stripping" done at Rotorua, because of the extremely late "runs," and it is doubtful if such operations will be necessary here this year. In all directions early "runs" are recorded, and fish up to seven and eight pounds have been seen passing up the streams. Mr. Kean points out that the capture of many young fish last season shows that recent liberations of fry have been successful, and the restocking operations are filling all requirements. Of course, changes in conditions may upset all calculations, but judging from the early "runs" and the abundant evidence of good healthy fish, there is every reason to anticipate that next season will be a good one.
