SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The One Tree Hill Croquet Club held a bridge party at the J.C.L. tearooms yesterday afternoon with the object of assisting Sister Esther's funds for the poor of Auckland. The president, Mrs. T. F. Daniels, who was in a figured velvet, and black velvet hat, was assisted by Mrs. E. W. Wilson, who wore a cherry woollen crepe de chine, and hat to tone. There was a good attendance on Monday evening at St. John's Girls' Club social, when the hostesses were the Misses B. Mountefiore, G. Mensforth and G. Westbrook. The entertainers, Mrs. Teasdale and the Misses J. Roberts and H. Garvey, had arranged an interesting programme, which included a lecture by Dr. J. B. W. Roberton on "Ethics." and songs by the Glee Club. a * * * A dance was held at the "Oaks," Wellesley Street, on Saturday evening, as a farewell for Mr. Arthur Bray, of England. Hamblin, was given in Ward 11 at the hospital on Wednesday evening. The programme was provided by the Victoria League Girls' Committee, under Mrs. Rickerby and supplemented by other artists. Those taking part were: Miss P. D. Renner, Miss M. Fair, Miss T. Rountree, Miss McCullock, Mrs. Roose, Mrs. Bart Clark, Miss M. Higgins, Mr. H. G. Chevis and Mr. Dunsmuir. Mrs. Gubb, Mrs. Barker and Miss Seldom, new members, were welcomed. The exchange was well patronised. A pleasant social half-hour was then spent, and afternoon tea handed round. At the third euchre party of the series at Tirau the prizes were won by Mr. Morgan and Miss Seldom, and the consolation prizes by Miss Webster and Mr. C. Norris. Music for the dance was supplied by Mrs. Bishop and Mrs. Litchfield. Miss Webster played extras. * * * * The members of Lodge Papatoetoe 227 and their friends held their monthly winter social and card evening at Papatoetoe on Wednesday night, when the Papatoetoe Ha,rmonists provided the musical programme. Items were rendered by a quartet comprising Mrs. Hyland, Miss Wilson, Dr. Valentine and Mr. Salter, a solo by Mrs. Hyland, and a duet by Dr. Valentine and. Mr. Salter. Mrs. Valentine acted as accompanist. The progressive 500 tournament was won by Mrs. W. A. Key and Mr. P. Edmund. * * * * The members of the Devonport League of Mothers were present at the Masonic Hall, Devonport, on Tuesday afternoon to listen to an address by Mrs. Turner, of Mount Albert. Miss Laird, of Mount Albert, gave a vocal item. It is interesting to note that the league at Devonport was instituted five years ago at the instigation of Lady Alice Fergusson, with 12 members, and it has grown till now it possesses 80 members. Mrs. Geo. Budd is the president, and Mrs. J. A. Ross secretary. At the conclusion of yesterday's meeting the committee served afternoon tea.. * ft ft An enjoyable bridge evening was given at the nurses' home, King George V. Hospital, Rotorua, by Miss A. Searell and Miss E. Stanton. The bridg©. room was gay with jonquils and golden chrysanthemums. Miss Searell wore blue floral crepe de chine and Miss Stanton navy blue georgette with a black velvet bridge coat. Prizes for the progressive bridge were won by Mr. W. Lindsay and Mrs. A. Morrison. Mrs. Finch, of Mount Albert, gave a bridge party at her home, yesterday afternoon. The guests of honour were the president and executive officers of the Auckland Croquet Association. The rooms and tea table were arranged in various shades of gold and lemon poppies, and Josephine marigolds. Prizes were won by Mesdames B. Keesing, McGill and Hamilton. An enjoyable evening was given by Mrs. Mayall at her home in Ellerslie last evening for her daughter who leaves for Melbourne with her aunt, Mrs. Stevens, by the Ulimaroa on Friday. Mrs. Mayall, who received, wore navy crepe de chine: Miss E. Mayall, pink tulle and lace; Mrs. Stevens, black lace and floral velvet bridge coat. A happy hour was spent on Tuesday at a luncheon party given by the girls of Messrs. A. J. Entrican and Co. in honour of Miss Mayall, who is leaving for Melbourne to enter a newsphere of life. The tables were prettily decorated. The guest was dressed in navy blue georgette. Miss Hounsell, when presenting Miss Mayall with a bouquet of violets and carnations, wished her every success, and assured her of the best wishes of her fellow employees. St. Paul's Hall presented a. gay scene last Saturday evening when the Calliope Sea Scout Company gave a dance to celebrate their tenth birthday. The hall was tastefully decorated with flags, ferns, balloons and streamers and the shields of the company. Mr. and Mrs. Asquith gave two humorous items. Mrs. Ford sang "Land of Long Ago," and Mrs. Sherwin sang "Pipes of Pan." Sea Scout Sherwin played two pianoforte solos, and little Joy Asquith gave two recitations. The Mercury Bay Tennis Club licld a ; T)00"' and musical evening at the residence of" Mrs. E. S. Troughear at Whitianga 011 Thursday evening. Over 50 guests were present. Miss E. Milton won the ladies' prize and Mr. W. B. Topp the gentleman's. The consolation prizes were secured by Mrs. K. Morley and Mr. W. Kirk, jun. Singing and dancing were also indulged in. Supper was provided by Mesdames Troughear, Morley and Queenan. Mrs. Balph and Miss V. McCabe supplied the music.

Large clusters of imitation ripe red cherries set in green foliage made an attractive sight as decoration in the hall of the Y.W.C.A. yesterday afternoon when a Cherry Fair was held by the association. In opening the function, the Mayoress, Mrs. G. W. Hutchison, emphasised the fact of the urgent need for funds to carry on the religious, social and other services and in view of the circumstances, workers for such needed e-very support. The object of the fair was to raise funds to keep going that part of -the international work of the Y.W.C.A. that was the responsibility of New Zealand, and it would be most regrettable if the work could not continue through lack of funds. Gailydecorated stalls lined the halls and a brisk business was done. Selections were given by Mr. Roger Fenton's orchestra and a waxwork display by members of the Mothers' Club. A living reproduction in tableau form of famous pictures from ten different nations was given by the senior clubs in the evening.
