OTAHUH'J COUNCIL

The Otahuhu Borough Council mat last evening, the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, presiding. Straying Stock.—The Main Highways Board drew the council's attention to the complaints received of the danger of straying stock on the main highway. The •board suggested that traffic inspectors should regard it as part of their duty to impound straying cattle. The letter wa3 received, the council 'being of the opinion. this was not part of a traffic inspector's duty. _ _ i Petition.—A petition signed by 50 residents of Olevedon Road, suggesting improvements to this road, was referred to the works committee. _ Fire. Brigade Services.—The Mount Wellington Road Board wrote saying it considered the suggested contribution of £75 per annum was more than it could pay and offered to ipay £10 plus the expenses incurred in attending each fire in their district. The fire brigade committee will confer with the .brigade and Teport later. Hospital Levy.—The council received notice that this year's hospital levy would be £1222, which is £219 less than last year, equal to %th of a penny on. the general rate. It was decided that the ratepayers be given the benefit of the reduction. The general rate will there* fore ;be reduced &Bth of a penny ia the £1. Chlorination Plant.—Considerable diesatisfaction was expressed at the delay in installing the new filter at the pumping station. It was agreed that the supplying firm be informed that unless something definite were done, drastic action would .be taken. Demolition Order.—Some discussion arose on the report from the Medical Officer of Health on the request for a demolition order against a blacksmith's shop opposite the borough chambers. The Mayor stated the occupier had started to make repairs without applying for a permit, and proceedings had been taken against him. The town clerk and the inspector were authorised .to see that the building is put in perfect order, or demolition will be insisted upon. •Hardness of Water.—Mr. Grey asked if nothing could be done to soften the borough water. It was finally agreed that the works committee go into the question. Finance Committee.—Mr. J. Hunter was appointed chairman of the finance committee. The committee recommended that the rents payable by the foreman and quarry foreman be reduced to 27/. Thie was agreed to. _, _ , Benefit Rugby Match.—The Rugby Union has arranged a senior match at Sturgess Park to-morrow, and a collection will bo taken up in aid of the Benevolent Society. The council decided to thank the union.
