BRISBANE, May 31. On the opening day of the Queensland Turf Club's Cup meeting at Eagle Farm course the chief event resulted: — THE KING'S PLATE of one mile and a quarter. Weight-for-age. GREAT IDEA. S.ll—Shean 1 VALOREX. S.II— BSJI 2 RUBE PADDINGTON. S.l2—Blnndell . - 3 j Ten started. Won by a head, third horse two lengths away. Time. 2.4 J. MUCH IMPROVED. Fm Alone, one of the members of Mr. W. G. Stead's small team, is occasionally taken to Hastings to do his fast work. This big gelding is said to be much improved in looks and condition, but his track work does not suggest that he is in winning form at the present time. LIGHT BEAM FOR TIMING. The Jockey Club stewards, including] Lord Harewood, have been testing at] Newmarket an invisible light beam intended to time races and eliminate any margin of human error. A portable eet j projects a beam of infra-red rays across the course at the finishing post. The winning horse will break the beam and stop the watch. It is claimed that the invisibility of the ray avoids the posj sibility of frightening the horses.
