SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Mothers' Club, Y.W.C.A., was well attended at their usual weekly meeting ■when Mrs. Mann presided. An address was given by the Rev. R. C. Roberts on "Unemployment." Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. * * # * The Holy Trinity Social Club held, its fortnightly meeting in the Parish Hall, Otahuhu, last week, when a very pleasant time was spent in dancing, cards and competitions. Miss Hill won the ladies' prize in the "500" tournament, while Mr. L. Hubbard won the gentlemen's trophy. " Mr. H. P. Lovell, the club's president, presented the prizes to the successful players. *. * * * An enjoyable tea was given at the residence of Mrs. Bischoff, Crown Street, Royal Oak, recently, when Miss M. Bischoff entertained some of her friends to celebrate the coming of age of Miss .H. Littlejohn. The evening was spent in games and various other items. Prizes were won by the Misses M. Bischoff, 11. Littlejohn, V. Littlejohn, M. Reid, G. Percival and J. Mackenzie. " * * * * The members of the Epsom W.C.T.U. met on Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Hemas, Belvidere Street. Mrs. Benfell presided over a good attendance, and gave an instructive address on "Social Responsibility." Discussion followed on ways and means of enlarging the scope of work. A bring-and-buy table added cosiderably to the funds „ Afternoon tea and thanks to the hostess brought a pleasant meeting to a close. * « * » A surprise party was taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. Hawthorne Pope, St. George's Bay Road, Parnell, on Saturday evening, when the entertainment was Mali Jong and bridge. The eupper tables had beautiful winter flowers, and these were also in the card rooms. Mrs. Pope wore a brown Chantilly lace gown. Among those present were: Mesdames G. Hutchison, Chis Whitney, D. Friedlander, S. Caro, G. Smith, H. Peacoeke, G. Marriner, J. A. B. Hellaby, D. Scott, White, Misses Enid White, Shannon. *** # - The annual meeting of the Hillsboro' Croquet Club was held last week in the club pavilion. Mrs; Thompson presided over a good attendance of members. The report show-ed the past season had 'been a successful one, and the financial position of the club was entirely satisfactory. Officers were elected as follow:—President, Mrs. Thompson; vice-presidents, Mi v s. Allen, Mrs. Clark; hon. secretary, Mrs. Ward; lion, treasurer, Mrs. Lynn; committee, Mesdames Stringer, Bischoff, Pegler, Ratcliffe; green- superintendent, Mr. Stringer; match committee, Mesdames Clark, Lynn, Wilkinson, Ovenden, Buckle; delegates to the Auckland Association, Mesdames Thompson and Ward. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Ward for his services as honorary auditor. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the president, Mrs. Thompson. » » •» * The Crystal Palace Winter Garden was the scene on Saturday evening of a highly successful and enjoyable function by the Nicholson Park Tennis Club. Prizes for the club competitions were presented by the wife of the president, Mrs. F. G. Blott, the winners being: Misses Pollards, B. Lee, T. Lauder, M, McConacliie, and Messrs. W. Gooch, R, Potter, A. Clements, and R. Gotobv. The committee were: Miss Yeoman, green georgette and coatee, to tone; Miss Woods, pink lace and net, and pink coatee; and Miss Blott, ankle-length floral georgette. Amongst those present were: Mrs. F. G. Blott, the president's wife,' black lace and net; Mrs. A. G, Brown, black chiffon velvet; Mrs. A, Roberts, black lace, and velvet coatee; Mrs. Francey (Sydney), primrose georgette, and wrap to tone; Mrs. Gow, shot taffeta; Mrs. Peeler, black georgette; Mrs. Armitage, black chenille and satin; Mrs. Parker, black lace; Miss Layland. gold lame and net; Miss I). Woods, ankle-length green net: Miss L. Ecclcs, Alice blue frilled georgette; Miss P. Eccles, turquoise blue geortretto: Miss Heeley, lime crepe de chine: Miss Guy. primrose lace and chenille coatee; Miss Kinnear, blue satin; Miss Davidson, pink georgette and lace, with coatee; Miss Lee, pink georgette; Miss Lauder, georgette and net; Miss G. Stone, lemon taffeta and net; Miss L. Munns, almond green crepe de chine and silver lace.
