NEWTON IMPROVE.

Marist were too strong for Newton Rangers, who, though beaten by 18 points to 0, put up a game performance for a lighter team. Their showing in the second stanza was particularly impressive. Campbell was safe at full-back and fielded surely, but the three-quarter line, with the exception of Bachelor, did not function to the best advantage. Brady continues to show a tendency to over-indulge in bustling tactics. Brisbane played a fine all-round game and though Gregory improved he was slow on most occasions. Hassan was active behind a fairly good pack and scored a fine try. Campbell did not have all his own way with tli« hooking, Simms, Young and Johnson being other forwards who showed up. Dempsey was a resourceful full-back and is endowed with enterprise and courage. Beattie was only fair on the wing. Pope and Harris being better, though the last-mentioned showed several handling faults at critical junctures. Eddle*tone and Brimble sparkled as insides. and Brimble scored three well-deserved tries. Porteous played an excellent game at half, and it was regretted that he collapsed after the game to be taken to hospital suffering from severe concussion. Emanuel was a success as a rake and proved a tiger for work. Allen, Francis and Middleton were in good form, and McCarthy, a back, was also effective. Newton were without their regular centre three-quarter and should be very hard nest time out.
