"INSIDIOUS PRACTICE."
FARMERS' LIFE POLICIES. DEMANDED AS SECURITIES. PROTEST IN CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Stock and station firms which demand farmers' life insurance policies as chattel securities were criticised at the annual conference of the North Canterbury Farmers' Union. "There are some financial institutions which are making systematic raids on life policies. It is a very dangerous precedent to he allowed to take place," said Mr. E. A. Woodfield. He added that life policies were taken out for the benefit of farmers' wives and children in case anything befell the head of the family. He thought the conference should see if anything could be done to check this insidious practice. A remit was adopted urging that farmers be discouraged from pledging their policies as security for any purpose whatever.
