LOW SCORES AT LORD'S.
Probably the most notable among low scores at Lord's of comparatively recent years was the total of 18, for which Harry Trott's Australian team of 189G was dismissed by the M.C.C. team of that year. The Australians had won seven and drawn two of the first nine matches of their tour. M.C.C. knocked up 219 in their first innings, and Australia collapsed before Pougher and Hearne (J. T.) for 18, the last six wiekete not making a run. In their second innings Hearne took nine wickets, and M.C.C. won by an innings, avenging their historic defeat of 1878. That same Australian team was dismissed by England at Lord's a little later in the season for 53, in their first innings of the first Test. George Giffen, Harry Trott, Harry Graham, Hugh Trumble and J. J. Kelly all contributed "ducks," while Clem Hill got only a single. Richardson (six for 39) and Lohmann (three for 13) were the successful bowlers. That was on a good wicket. Six weeks later, on a difficult wicket at the Oval, Peel (six for 23) and Hearne (four for 19) got the same Australian side out for 44.
That 53 was the lowest aggregate for an Australian team at Lord's in a Test match. Lower aggregates in Test matches have been recorded, as 45 by England at Sydney in 1887, 42 by Australia at Sydney in 1888, 36 by Australia at Birmingham in 1892, and 44 by Australia at the Oval in 1896. But the M.C.C. feat of getting the Australian international side out at Lord's in 1896 for 18 is paralleled only by the 1878 Australian team's effort of dismissing a, great M.C.C. side at Lord's far 19.
