CABLE REPAIRED.
BREAK NEAR NORFOLK ISLAND
RETURN OF THE IRIS. After having repaired a break in the Auckland-Norfolk Island cable, the Pacific Cable Board's steamer Iris returned to Auckland this morning and went to her usual moorings at Devonport. The Iris, under the command of Captain W. Oliver, sailed on May 11, and arrived off Norfolk Island on'the 14th. The weather 011 the following day was unfavourable to commence operations, but on Sunday last one end of the cable was picked up seven miles off the shore. On the following day the other end of the broken cable was loeated and about a mile and three-quarters of new cable put in. ''It was a simple job," said one of the officers this morning. Her work completed, the Iris sailed for Auckland, thick weather being encountered on the return run. The Iris will now lay up at Auckland, and her crew will be paid off.
