COAL CARBONISATION.
RESEARCH IN BRITAIN. KUGBY, May 6. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Department of Mines, Mr. E. Shin well, stated in the House of Commons yesterday that he had consulted with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research on the best way in which the Government could assist in the development of low temperature carbonisation and other processes for the scientific treatment of coal. Substantial progress has been made in the last four years and certain processes were being operated on a commercial scale. Effective help would be given by the Government, first in experiments for the purpose of improving by refining the value of tar oil by low temperature carbonisation,- and, secondly, by the wider use in the Government services of smokeless fuel. v The Minister said he was considering what could be done to increase the use of pulverised fuel, especially for marine purposes. Important research work had been carried out at the fuel research station, and it would be continued.
