A NATIONAL GOVERNMENT.
THE NEED OF THE MOMENT. (To the Editor.) I am certain that the reply of the Leade? of the Opposition to the proposals of the Prima Minister will not be accepted -by the publiq as definitely 'bolting and barring the door against an arrangement to institute a National Government. The people of the Dominion in this time of difficulty are not interested in party politics, and will show little sympathy towards anyone who is not prepared to subordinate party to the people's welfare. Th<j formation of & National Government could surely be arranged for a limited period without any sacrifice of the principles of any party at present in Parliament. A very definite effort is now being made to meet a, position that has had its origin in post-war years of extravagance and a world-wide trad® depression. The completion of what has 'been commenced would be safe in the care of 4 National Government, hut if all parties go to the poll in December the whole of the good work accomplished up to that time will ba thrown into the melting pot, and the odds are that the whole fa'bric of economy will bo destroyed before there is an opportunity to prove "its value not only to the community at large, but also to the individual. Let the parties retain their prejudices and principles, 1 hut for the next two years let them combine to form a National Government pledged to : the financial rehabilitation of the Dominion, After that the politician can return to his party affiliations, if he is so inclined, with the virtuous feeling that he has served the ;best interests of his country without any suggestion of sacrifice of principle. COUNTRY FIRST.
