SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A dance organised by the members of the WoodhiU Hall committee was held on Saturday night. The proceeds were in aid of the Woodhill Library. The prizes for a Monte Carlo dance were won by Mr. and Mrs. Grant. The music was supplied by Mrs. S. Phillips and Mr. C. Hoist.

A' gift party was given recently by Miss Clare Johnston at her home, One Tree HilL for Miss Meg. Alia way, whose marriage takes place at Whangarei next week. Miss Johnston received the guests in a floral frock in autumn colours. Mrs. Johnston wore a navy crepe de chine, ■with touches of pink*, The guest of honour wore a dainty frock of pervenche blue crepe fleuri. Others present were:— Mesdames Staunton, L. An enjoyable evening was spent at the Presbyterian Manse, Mangere, on Tuesday, when the young men and women's Bible classes met together to farewell one. of-.their leaders. The guest of , honour was Miss Rene Moore, who is leaving Mangere district after . many years' faithful service in both school and church. During the evening a varied programme of games was carried out. Mr. Hugh Dean,-who was chosen to present Miss Moore with a handsome handbag, made a. nice little speech. Miss Muriel Dean then presented her with a beautiful bouquet of chrysanthemums. After singing "A Jolly. Good Fellow," a dainty supper" was served.

On Saturday last a delightful concert was given at Motuihi Island for the Napier refugee children. It was arranged by Mr. Hamblin. The programme, which was under the direction of Mrs. Boyle, consisted of songs, dancing, elocution, special items by the orchestra, and a ventriloquist. The concert was enjoyed by the children and staff, and thanks were given to the following performers:—Misses Pat and Kathleen Boyle, Koanui Simeon, Wilma Lockwood, Avis Arthur, M. and D. The monthly meeting of the ladies' committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held last evening in the society's room, Dilworth Building. Mrs. M. Arthur, president, was in the chair. Great satisfaction was expressed at the success of the jumble Kale held on Saturday last, the net proceed* being £53 10/. This sum goes to augment the funds of the Stray Animals' Home. A beautifully worked pair of pillow shams had been received from Mrs. W. Patterson, of Whangare], to he sold in aid of Animal Welfare Week funds, and a dainty blue dreeing jacket was presented by Mrs. J. F. Scott for the same cause. These ladies received a vote of thanks from the committee. At the conclusion of the evening's business, Mr. A. M. Perry, executive member, gave an interesting address ,on his work for the welfare of animal* in the .country, Mr. Perry's work as honorary inspector of the Mciiity, .extends over a period of thirty year*, and' his listeners 'were much impressed witfr his experiences. A hearty Ek vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Perry.

To celebrate the success of Mr. G. W. Hutchison in the Mayoral contest, a supper party was given in honour of him and Mrs. Hutchison at their residence in Portland Road, Remuera, last evening. The various rooms were a bower of autumn blooms, cerise shades, carnations taking pride of place on the supper table. During the evening there was an amusing presentation to ,Mr. Hutchison. Mrs. H. J. Collins presided over the Te Awamutu branch of the Plunket Society on Monday afternoon. The nurse's report for the month of April showed 22 new cases. Visits to the homes were 53, to the rooms by adults 139, babies 140, older children 17, total visits 348. Telephone calls were 35. The babies under supervision were 215, and older children 40. The date for the annual meeting was fixed for 1.30 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, in order to give country people an opportunity of attending, and a- really good attendance ox the general public would go a long way to encourage the committee in its endeavours for the coming year, which promises to be a particularly.hard one for the Plunket Society. There is an indication that the Government (which at present provides roughly one-third of the cost of running a branch, the remainder being raised by local effort), may find it necessary to withdraw this aid altogether, and will in any case be making a substantial reduction in it. The box donations (April 9 to May 4) totalled 19/6.

The monthly meeting of the Takapuna branch of the League of Mothers was held in St. Peter's Parish Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. J.' Thompson presided, and Mrs. W. R. Wilson gave an interesting address on Guiding. Mrs. Wilson said that when attending the Guide Conference in England, at which 40 nationalities were represented, the Junior League of Nations struck her as an apt name to apply to the Guide movement, also that its far-reaching effects and benefits would be felt far more in the future than during the present generation. Mrs. Wilson heard Lloyd George speak at the Imperial Congress, where he stated that it must be the Dominions and the colonies' special work to waken England, which was asleep. Mrs. Thompson thanked Mrs. Wilson for her interesting lecture. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Mcbride, Wiseman, sen., and Cook. Amongst those present were: —Mesdames J. Thompson, J. The St. George's Hall, Epsom, was gaily decorated on Tuesday evening for tho bridge party arranged by' Mrs. Preston Chambers, Mrs. E. W. J. Bowden, and members of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild. The proceeds will bo devoted to the hospftalrand social welfare work of the Flying Angel Missons to Seamen. Mrs. Chambers received the guests in a black georgette, and Mrs. Bowden in a midnight blue crepe do chine. A progressive day in aid of the Mount Albert Croquet Club was held on their lawns on Tuesday, when the winners in the first session were: A, Mesdames Scott and Wrigley; B, Mesdames Percey and Daniels. In the second session the winners were: A, Miss Waldrom and Mrs. Tongue; B, Mesdames Carter and Gillard. Many sister Clubs were represented, including Avondale, Carlton, Henderson, New Lynn, Glen Eden, Hallyburton Johnstone, Takapuna, Ponsonby, Rocky Nook, Howick, Stanley Bay, One Tree Hill, Onehunga, Hillsboro' and Waitemata.

. The Otahuhu Free Kindergarten held a bridge afternoon in Milne and Choyce's rooms yesterday. The rooms were tastefully decorated with Iceland poppies and foliage plants. The lounge of the Lyceum Club was gay with flowers yesterday afternoon, when Mrs. A. Buchanan and Miss M. Buchanan held a large party for old friends. The middle of the room was graced with splendid specimens of bronze chrysanthemums in a big brass bowl, and the corners held blue and pale pink hydrangeas, with autumn scarlet leaves, in the alcoves over the open hearths.
