SENSATIONAL GOLF.
FINE DEBUT AT MIDDLEMORE MENZIES ROUND IN SEVENTY.
Bruce Menzies, the young Otahuhu champion, who won the provincial championship at Middlemore at Easter, and subsequently became a member of the Auckland Golf Club, made a sensational debut with his new club during the week-end, when he registered a brilliant round of 70, the best card that has been returned by a member since the new holes have been in play. In fact, if equalled the record for the course of 70 established by R. D. Wright in the qualifying round of the championship in October, 1928. Prior to that Wright and A. D. S. Duncan jointly held the record of 71. In establishing his record, Wright was out in 39, and home in .31. It is unfortunate for Menzies that his score was not made in competition play, the qualification for official recognition.
By way .of comparison it is worth noting that the best scores in the qualifying rounds of the provincial championship at Middlemoro at Easter were 73, registered by H. B. Lusk, J. L. Black, B. J. Smith and Alan Donald. In his gtiinc in the first round of the captain's tournament on Saturday E. L. Bartlcct was in a similar position to Menzies; when he won his match at the sixteentli, lie wanted two fours for a 70, but he finished with a five and a six in 73. Even more sensational than Menzies' performance was Dclph's home journey of 31 in the match with W. N. Abbott on Saturday. This has never been bettered. Menzies' card, with the .bogey figures in parentheses, is as follows , .—Out, 4 (4), 4 (5), 5 (4)t 4 (',), -4 (4), 3 (3), 3 (4), 5 (5), total 36 (39); home, 3 (3), 4 (4), 4 (.5), 3 (3), 3.(4), 5 (4), 4 (4), 4 (.5), 4 (4), total U (36). Delph's homeward journey compared with bogey is:—2 (3), 3 (4), 4 (5), 3 (3), 3 (4), 4 (4), 5 (4), 3 (5), 4 (4).
