One of the outstanding features of the recent United States naval manoeuvres. which ranged round a supposed attack on the Panama Canal, was the failure of the giant airship, Los Angeles. It got lost for a time, failed to spot any vessels of the attacking fleet that had not already ■been sighted by aeroplanes, and finally blundered within range of hostile guns by which it was theoretically destroyed. One destroyer sighted the Los Angeles without being in turn observed from the dirigible and its scouting reports had been anticipated long before by heav.ier-than-air craft. Tim gunners of the hostile fleet reported that they found the Los Angelre a shining target which it was easy to shoot down. Aeroplanes proved altogether far more useful as the eyes of the fleet.
