MANUKAU AMATEURS.

In striking contrast to the weather on the opening day of the road season, a fortnight ago, ideal conditions favoured the competitors in the Manuknu Amateur Cycling Club's junior and senior events on Saturday. Of the seventeen juniors "Vie ,, Gordon rode alone off scratch and conceded starts up to three minutes, with the nearest rivals, Robinson, McLachlan, Oxton and Pinfold on the 30 seconds mark. As expected, Bates ran home a Tvinner with 48 seconds to spare from Potter. A stirring sprint eventuated for third place between Bellini, Robinson, and McLachlan, which Bellini, the Avondale ankler, won by a length. The result was as follows:— E. W. Bates (3m), 15.46 1 E. Potter (3m), 16.34 2 I. C. Bellini (lm), 14.40 3 A. W. D. Robinson (30s), .14.10 4 J. H. McLachlan (30s), 14.10 1-5 5 Fastest time was recorded by A. W. D Robinson in 14.10. He defe.Tted McLachlan by half a length for the honour. ; A good race with a sensationally close finish, considering it was the first event over the course run on a handicap system, was witnessed when the fourteen seniors got loose. The final interest lay b<?twfii>n Baston, who led for over five laps. Andrews and Spragg, who, pacing together, gradually overhauled Baston, only to catch him with two miles to go, Baird and C"iaik, who lapped well, and Cleaver and Foubister. On the fourth lap Cleaver left the long distance rider. Casey, and I.es Dwight, but on the last lap was caught by Foubister, whose effort was equal to any of the best he has ever displayed on the road. The successful seniors over a course of 17 3-5 miles were:— E. D. Andrews (4m), 45.51 1 Ken. Spragg (4m), 45.51 1-5 2 R. T. Baston (sml, 4C.52 •> G. P. Clark (2m), 44.23 .. 4 S. J. Baird (2m)'. 44.25 1-5 5 R. G. Foubister (scr). 42.5? 6 E. A, Cleaver (lm), 43.")" i The above were the only fiflnisliers. Fastest time was registered by Ron. G. Foubister in 42.57.
