An At Home will take place "at the Lyceum Club on. Tuesday, . when the hostesses will be/the president, Mrs. W. H.. parkes, who leaves shortly for England, Mrs. P. A. Lindsay, and Mrs. John Reid. • • The weekly meeting.: of'the Writers' Club was- held in the studio, Union Buildings, on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Cluett, the president of the newlyformed club, presided, and gave an excellent talk on "The Power of Words, their. Use and Abuse." She gave many valuable hints to writers; advised conciseness, simple. and forceful sentences. The members listened with great interest/and a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. Cluett closed the - afternoon's proceedings. ~•.'. • *•'"'"••'.# p The members of the Tirau branch of the,women's division, of the Farmer's met on Thursday, wheit "Mrs;'Morris presided. Miss Seaman was welcomed as a new member. Mrs. McLaren and Mrs. J. W. Amoom were appointed advisory members for: the ensuing year. This branch ? has now ; fallen into;- line with others'by holding an exchange stall. This proved a. great attraction, and resulted in brisk' business. The branch retains one penny in; the shilling 'commission. The annual; dance, was held on April 15, and was Very successful. • ■ ■* •* •• '■The committee of the Otahuhu Kindergarten held an enjoyable dance and, social evening last Wednesday. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs. Kemp and Mrs. Simons, and the lucky number spot waltz by Mr. | and Mrs. Jameson. Mrs. Montgomery and Miss Craig were the winners of the spot waltz, and Miss M. Tucker won a competition. During the evening items were given by Miss Valerie Dyason and Miss Dorothy Arnold, who gave recitations, and by Messrs.. Jameson and Blackmore, who played a guitar duet. Miss Mary College gave an exhibition of dancing. •*• # . .The monthly meeting of the Epsom Women's Christian Temperance Union was held on Thursday afternoon at the homo of.Mrs. Hemus, Belvidere Street. The very wet afternoon interfered somewhat' with the attendance, but those who,were present thoroughly enjoyed the fine report of the recent Dominion convention held at Nelson. This was given by Mrs. Kasper, who entered very fully into every detail of the business transacted. On conclusion, she was warmly thanked. Plans were made for holding a series of drawing room meetings within the next few months. '*'~.* * . * A party, was held recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Steele, Balmoral Road, to farewell Miss Marjorie Morton, who, with her parents, left yesterday for Scotland. The drawing room was tastefully-decorated, and games and musical items, with community singing, helped to pass away an enjoyable evening. During the evening Miss Morton received a small, well-bound address book. Miss Joan Steele acted as hostess in a frock of blue silk lace. Amongst those present were: Mrs. J. Steele, in a black fringed evening frock and velvet bridge coat; Miss'Marjorie Morton,, in blue floral silk- uinon; Mrs. F. Knight,Misses Alma Bain, Lorraine A Malby,'Lois* Knight, Olive Gary, .-and others. ,

. The silver "wedding of" Mr. and Mrs." Wm. Scott, formerly of Lanarkshire, Scotland, . was celebrated on Wednesday'eveiling at" £hoir residence, St. Luke's Boad, Morning-side, when there was a large gathering of relations and 'friends present. The reception room ■ was' beautifully 'decorated with white and' silver streamers, and autumn flowers, and, alsor a .white wedding bell. The chairman - for the evening . was the. brother of, the bridegroom, Mr. i Lauchlan Scott. After supper the toast on behalf of the bride and bridegroom was proposed by Mr. L. Scott, which the bridegroom responded to with a toast on behalf of the family, to which, the eldest son, Master J. Scott, responded. Congratulations to the bride and bridegroom were pic-. seated by Mr. H. S.'Chalmers, Mr. Taylor, Mr. S. Harris, Mr. T. McEwf i, Mr. Hoar, Mr. Nichol, and Mr. A. Morton. The programme consisted of solos, duets recitations and games! The guest of honour wore brown' crepe de chine, trimmed with beige.

• The girls, of the Query Club aud other . young friends rendered valuable services as waitresses at the recent mock banquet, held'in the Co'ncert Chamber, to augment the funds of the Mayoress' War. Miss E. Malam and Mr. J. Church wo'n the exhibition dance. The card tournament was conducted by Mrs. Randall and Miss H. Holm. The prizes were won by Mrs. T. Brady and Mr. 0. Costello, with' Miss "Hardy and Mr. C. Holm as runners-up. »■'.;' * * ♦ A dance was held in the Tauwharc Hall on Thursday, arranged by the members of the football club. Deluca. ■' '■- * -*" * * There was a good attendance of members at"'the: second meeting of the sea-son-of the Holy Trinity Social Club held •in the'Parish'Hall, Otahuhu, when the president of the club, Mr. H. P. Lovell, welcomed the newly-appointed vicar, the Rev. R. J. Stanton, and the curate, the Rev. B. C. Palmer. Mr. Stanton, who is the club's patron, appealed to the members to cultivate the spirit of cheerfulness and goodwill which is the motto of the club. Dancing and cards was the programme of the evening. In the 500 tournament, Mrs. McLaren won the ladies' prize, while Mrs, Hosking won the, gentlemen's section. The prizes were presented by Mrs. Stanton.
