LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

APPOINTMENT OF REFEREES.

MANAGEMENT REPRESENTATION

APPROVED,

By a clear majority the Auckland Rugby League Referees' Association last evening adopted Mr. Carroll's notice of motion that its grading and appointments committee should consist of two of its members and a representative of the Auckland Rugby League. Before the matter was dealt with the chairman of the league, Mr. George Rhodes, explained that the parent body considered it was fully entitled to have a representative on the committee, in view of the fact that the association had a direct delegate on the management. The league had no desire to dictate to the referees, whose fine work was always appreciated.

The mover of the notice said he was prompted to submit the proposal because the league was now allowing clubs to participate more fully in the benefits of the gates. The association should try to work with the league as one body, and was assured by the chairman that the management representative would be selected to co-operate with the association members. Mr. V. Simpson said Mr. Carroll's resolution solved a difficulty, and the presence of Mr. Rhodes that evening demonstrated that the league desired to continue on harmonious lines with its referees for the good of the game. Mr. Sanders also emphasised that the formation of the committee gave the association' the balance of power. Mr. McCowatt said that if the association had known the position as then presented, the matter could have been settled in one night. Messrs. T. Hill and W. S. Simpson opposed the notice of motion, alleging that the committee, as constituted last year, was unsatisfactory. The chairman, Mr. S. Ball, said the notice of motion was ideal, and it made for a proper personnel for the committee. After discussion by Messrs. Chalmers, D. Taylor and several other members, the notice of motion was overwhelmingly carried. On a ballot being taken Messrs. A. Sanders and Frank Thompson were voted to the committee, the unsuccessful nominees being Messrs. T. Hill and G. McCowatt.

Mr. Les Bull subsequently gave a lecturette on the playing rules, and was accorded a vote of thanks.
