The programme is, very original and includes some of Auckland's leading artists, besides a host of waiters and waitresses. Unless the league is able to considerably augment its funds by this effort it will mean that it will have to cease activities shortly. This would deprive many iii the backblocks of the companionship of reading matter during the long winter evenings, and only those who have lived in isolation can realise what a loss this would be.

Mrs. Gordon Robertson addressed the members of the Penwomen's League at their Tooms on Friday afternoon on the national movement in modern music, Mrs. Macky, president, being in the chair. This national movement, the- speaker said, has been noticeable for the last 100 years, especially during the second half of the century. Previously Italy was supreme in opera and oratorio, and Germany in orchestral music; now each follows a national path of its own. An era of change, a mechanised age, is passing over the world which is reflected in the geometric, ultra-modern tendencies of the music of to-day; such innovations being for the most part unwelcome. The national lack of appreciation exhibited by the British to their own composers and musicians is regrettable, much good work having been accomplished by them. Mrs. Robertson epoke of the increasing liaison between music and literature, fostered by Schumann and Weber, reciting a short poem in illustration. The lecture was agreeably varied by songs by Miss Edna Craig, "Si mes vers avaient des ailes" (Hahn) and "L'Heure exquise" (Hahn), and Miss Laura Walker, "Romance" (Debussy) and "Lo Roi d'Ys" (Lalo), also two piano solos, "Clair de Lunc" (Debussy) and "Island Spells" (Ireland), played in masterly style by the lecturer. Tea closed an enjoyable afternoon.
