PREPARING ROSE BEDS.
Early preparation nf the soil is of immense importance where roses are to be planted this autumn or winter. Trenching or very deep digging should always be practised in preparing rose beds or borders. Light soils are not ideal for roses, but if some heavy loam, or even clay, can be obtained and well mixed with the natural soil, there will bo considerable improvement. Cow manure should be used on such soils in preference to stable manure, but the latter is excellent where stiff soils have to be dealt with and where it is difficult to obtain co' manure. The preparation of the soil at the present time will allow it a chance to get consolidated before planting time.
