"A TERRIBLE GIRL."
SENT TO BORSTAL INSTITUTE
THEFT OF DRESSES
"This is a case where common sense should take the place of sentiment. It is one of the saddest cases that has come under my notice. This girl has always been a terrible girl to do things wrong. She is always scheming and lying. I am loath to do it, but I strongly recommend that she be sent to the Borstal Institute." These remarks were made in tile Police Court this morning by Major Annie Gordon, when the case of Lilian Brooks was being dealt with.
Brooks pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing dresses at Wellington on February 15.
Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that accused obtained a position as waitress in a Wellington hotel in February, and lived with the remainder of the girls employed at the hotel. One day shet left hurriedly, saying that she did not like the hotel. She took her own clothes and two dresses belonging to other members of the staff with her.
Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.,- committed her
to a Borstal Institute for a term not exceeding two years.
