MARRIED WOMEN IN EMPLOYMENT.
Your correspondent "Earnest" neglects to follow out his suggested hare-brained legisla- ■ tion to its logical conclusion. If our Govern- • 'n ment prevents married women from remaining trij* in its service they must also bring down measures to prevent a man from employing- :.v his wife behind a counter, and this again would . prevent a bank manager's wife from running a. .w, boardinghouse and a dock worker's wife from-.— taking in washing. The dismissal of married . > rr . women teachers would in no way alleviate the distress of girls in Auckland, in fact, taking- - into consideration the "greed and selfishness" - mentioned by "Earnest," it might make. it >. v.., worse. A married teacher only keeps out of . a job a single teacher whose parents in bun-. . dreds of cases are more than capable of keeping her in comfort. When she is dismissed she goes on to the labour market still with greed and selfishness in her soul, malice in her heart against unjust treatment, a firsts ~r „ class education and matriculation in her head, :r -- and approximately £'200 in hard cash 0f../' refunded superannuation. Surely a formidably -■•■■■/% opponent for any Auckland girl, assuming that Auckland girls who are in danger are of the .. j educated class. . All things considered, legis-. lation on this point would probably have the . effect of putting out of work servants employed by those married couples, and ultimately would . ; . have the effect of fewer marriages by our greatest national asset, the educated woman. SANS HUMBUG. •
