SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A very pleasant dance was held at Devonport last evening \inder the auspices of the Devonport Yacht Club. The hall was tastefully decorated with festoons depicting the club's colours, and altogether the programme was a most attractive one. • * * * An interesting lecture on Scotland was given last Tuesday evening by Captain J. A. Algie, assisted by Mrs. Algie, in St. George'ij Presbyterian Hall, Takapuna, before a large audience. Scottish songs were beautifully rendered by Miss Marjorie Taylor and Mr. A. Boswell. A collection was taken up for the primary room building fund. • • • • An enjoyable evening was spent by the members of the Mount Albert Municipal Officers' Social Club and friends on Saturday last at the Mount Eden kiosk. Songs were given by Miss Cousins, and violin solos were rendered by Mrsj Fisher. The accompanists were Misses Budge, Ovenden and Peak. Among those present were: Mesdames Weaver, Shields, Duckworth, Marter, Fisher, Brooking, McDermott, F. Runciman; Misses Budge, Peak, Ovenden, MacDonald, Brittain, Fowler, Rhodes, Cousins, Hart, M. Ovenden and Marter. • # * * A surprise party organised for Miss Jean Moore took place at the residence of Mrs. F. Moore, Corunna Avenue, on Wednesday evening. The large dining room was cleared for dancing, and the drawing room and balcony were decorated with masses of chrysanthemums and Michaelmas daisy. Mrs. F. Moore wore black crepe de chine, Mrs. G. The Belmont-Bayswater branch of the League of Mothers held their second meeting recently, when Mrs. G. C. Brook presided. It was decided to hold the exhibition in July. The host and hostess had provided a large marquee, where a dainty luncheon and tea was served, and the coloured lights and decorations added to the gaiety of the scene. A number of novelty races and competitions were held, and one of the large baches was arranged for dancing. At the conclusion Mr. Geo. Hunt extended, on behalf of the members of the Auckland Toy Dog Club, thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Cowley for the hospitality which was extended to all. Mrs. S. W. J. W. L. Robinson, Clonbern Road. Mrs. Kasper presided and welcomed all, expressing her pleasure at seeing such a large number of ladies present. A helpful and instructive address on the "Aims and Work of the W.C.T.U." wad given by Mrs. Morgan Richards, district president, who made a strong appeal for every woman to join in the great work of fighting the social evils of our land, especially the drink traffic. As a result of this appeal seven new members were gained. A solo was rendered by I Mrs. John Craig, who afterwards contributed a duet with Mrs. Kasper. Mrs. Percy Winstone gave a pianoforte duet end played the accompaniments. The family of Mrs. Robinson added to the I enjoyment with a pianoforte solo '"fend a violin duet with piano accompaniment. A vote of thanks was passed to the hostess for the afternoon, who had made arrangements for the success of the | gathering. _ It is hoped to hold similar I meetings in the coming months in various homes in the district. * * * * A card party was held at the Tudor rooms yesterday afternoon, to supplement the funds of the Flying Angel I Mission to Seamen, by the Harbour Lights Guild Women's Auxiliary.
