PAPER SUSPENDED.

SYDNEY " EVENING NEWS."

SYDNEY, March 22

The "Evening News" has suspended publication, the final issue having appeared on Saturday. It is announced that th*i failure of negotiations between the proprietors and the Australian Journalists' Association and the printing unions was responsible for the cessation of publication until there is a return to normal business conditions.

The "Evening News" was first published in 1867 by Mr. S. Bennett. In 1920 Associated Newspapers, Ltd., witli a nominal capital of £3,000,000, was constituted, comprising Sun Newspapers, Ltd., and S. Bennett, Ltd. It also acquired the "Guardian" and the "Daily Telegraph." Last. April it was stated that the issued capital was about £3,500,000. The company has published two evening papers, the

"Sun" and the "Evening News," and two morning papers, the "Daily Guardian" and the "Daily Pictorial," and also Sunday papers and several weekly magazines.

The shareholders in February decided to close the ''Daily Pictorial'' and "Daily Guardian." merge the "Sunday Pictorial'' in the "Sunday Guardian," and produce a new "Daily Telegraph " There is now only one evening newspaper in Sydney (the "Sun"), and one in Melboure (the "Herald").
