CONDITIONS IN CHINA.

NEW ZEALAND MARKET.

BETTER PACKING OF GOODS

ESSENTIAL

TEADE REVIVAL FORECAST.

The opinion that New Zealand and Australian canned goods must be better packed if they are to sell well in China was expressed by a business man from Java some weeks ago, and is confirmed by Mr. R. 0. Wilson, an official of Imperial and International Communications, Ltd., who arrived by the Aorangi yesterday, en route to spend a holiday in his home city, Adelaide. "Australian and New ' Zealand tinned or packed goods are not put up in a manner attractive enough to compete with American lines," he said. "Manufacturers and exporters here should attend to this, because it is a great disadvantage where Eastern markets are concerned. Of course, New Zealand butter is always recognised as the best out East." The visitor, who has lived at Shanghai, Tientsin and Hongkong, said that bankers and other commercial men consider that within a year or two China would again be a very favourable market. Owing to continued internal warfare, stocks and supplies have become exhausted, and it is believed there will be an increasing demand for overseas goods. When he left Hongkong in January the dollar was down to lljd, exchange was very bad indeed, and the local people were hard hit. The prospects of a national Government being formed in China were remote. Changes occurred in China so rapidly that European people there were unable to follow the trend of events.
