"BETS ON WET DAYS."
BOOKMAKER FINED £30. LAST PENALTY DOUBLED. " He works on the wharf, but takes a few bets on wet days," said Detective Sergeant Kelly when Robert Francis Sino-e, a watersider, aged 46, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning on a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker on March 14. Mr. F. D. McLiver appeared for accused, and pleaded guilty. Detective Sergeant Kelly said that about 11.45 on March 15, accused was arrested in Quay Street by Detective Nalder. It was found that he had taken bets totalling £8 5/, and had laid 64 doubles. He had £37 10/ when arrested. He had been convicted in 1929 and fined £15. " He is in only a small way," said Mr. McLiver. "He bets a shilling to half-a-crown, and his doubles were only £8 to 2/. He is not really a bookmaker, but takes a few bets to oblige these men down on the wharf. He has a wife and two young children." " And I wonder what their wives have got to say about it ?" queried Mr. Hunt. "Well, we will double his last fine. Fined £30."
