"DELIBERATE SLACKING."

five relief workers DISMISSED. POSITION AT OHHE THEE HILL. The injunction of -the Unemployment Board to local bodies to aee that only genuine unemployed are given relief is being carried out very effectively by the One Tree Hill Borough Council. The town clerk, Mr. A. Lcese, reported to last evening's meeting of the council that five men had been dismissed for "deliberate and continued slacking." The remainder of the 152 men engaged under the No. 5 relief scheme were, with few exceptions, worjeing well. Since February 0, the sum of £1150 had ibeen paid as wages to rol'ief workers.' All the unemployed in th<> district, who had applied for work and complied with the regulations had been assisted, together with a few men from other quarters. The extension of No. 5 scheme, added the town el(?rk, would be of great value to the borough, and -would enable much of the development -work now under way to be completed at a minimum of cost to the ratepayers. "I think we are doing our best to engage the un loyeil men in our own district," said the Mayor, Mr. J. S. Hardwicke. The co-moil's staff was taxed to its utmost in providing for the relief workers, arui to engage more men would only embarrass them. Some really good mew were being engaged.
