INTEREST OVERDUE. Scullin Cabinet Considering Necessary Action. LAW MUST BE UPHELD. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright} CANBERRA, March IS. The fact that the New South Wales Government is £220,876 in arrears in its payment of interest due to the Commonwealth Government was disclosed by the Prime Minister, Mr. J. H. Scullin, in the House of Representatives. In stating that the amount named was overdue, Mr. Scullin announced that his Government was now considering the matter with a view to taking appropriate action to ensure that the law and Constitution of the Commonwealth were upheld.

A message from Albury states that a sequel to the recent determination of the farmers in that district to resist the selling-up of any of their number for default was the massing of about 200 men where a sale had been advertised to take place. Horsemen went from farm to farm telling every man that he was required to attend the sale and to assist, if occasion demanded, in preventing one of their number being victimised. The ready response proved that the farmers wer: in earnest about resisting forced sales. However, the auctioneer did not put in an appearance, and the men dispersed after resolving to return if necessary.

The bill will enter the committee stages today. BANK BUSINESS. I* HEAVY FALL IN TURNOVER. MELBOURNE, March 18. The tremendous fall in the banking turnover in the .past year was indicated before the full Arbitration Court to-day by counsel for the banks in applying for a 10 per cent cut in the award rates, of salaries of bank officials. Counsel said the total fall in the turn-# over of Australian banking was £32G,-» 500,000, and it was still falling.
