LABOUR AND ECONOMY.
The appointment by the British Government of a non-political committee to study all possible reductions in the " supply services " —that is, the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and the Civil Service —comes at a time when alarm is being freely expressed at the steady mounting of State expenditure. It should be noted that the original, move in this direction came from the Liberal party, and that before Mr. Mac Donald appointed the committee of investigation he consulted the Liberals and Conservatives. This, therefore, will be a non-political investigation, made with the consent of all parties. The. Labour party in New Zealand, which has not contributed any practical suggestion to the cause of economy, should note this. The Government should do the same, but for another reason. The present investigation into departmental expenditure is being r*ade by a committee that is composed entirely of Ministers and Civil Servants. The investigation will be conducted by outsiders of eminence in the world of commerce, including more than one accountant. Woulli not our own Civil Service benefit M r*& windows were opened to such a breeze of inspection?
