According to the Jewish rubric, the presence of ten males is essential before congregational worship can be conducted. The requisite ten are called "Minyan." From five to ten men, religiously inclined, are paid a "retaining fee," usually about £1 a month, to ensure their attendance at synagogue whenever Divine service is held. Sir Thomas Browne attributes the idea that burning ears means someone is talking about us to the old_ belief that guardian angels touch the right ear if talk about us is favourable, and the left ear if talk is unfavourable.
