SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

An enjoyable card evening, by members of the Roseville Tennis Club, Avondale, was held at the residence of Mrs. G. F. Strong, Moa Road, Point Chevalier, on Monday evening. There were about twenty-five players present and prizes were won by Mrs. H. J. Ellis and Mrs. P. J. Morrish, playing as a gentleman. Consolation prizes were won by Mrs. F. Rogers and Mr. C. E. Mansell, Lautoka, Fiji. J * » * * Miss Doris Young was the recipient of many useful and ornamental gifts on Tuesday afternoon when the lady members of St. Helicr's Tennis Club gave an At Home in honour of her approaching marriage. During the afternoon a progressive tournament was held, the winners being Miss Andrews and Miss M. White. Three sessions of progressive croquet were played, the winners being as follows: —First session, A: Mrs. Kay (Mount Wellington); B, Miss Washer (Onehunga). Second session, A: Mrs. Crawford (Onehunga); B, Miss Washer (Onehunga). Third session, A: Mrs. Forbes (Manurcwa); B, Mrs. Wilson (Rocky Xook). A cake was won by Mrs. Powell (Onehunga), and a ham by Mrs. Wliitten (Manurewa), while the mystery parcels went to Mrs. W. W. Massey and Mrs. Ellett.

At a meeting of the executive of the Mayoress' War Memorial Library League held 011 Tuesday, over which Mrs. A. D. Campbell presided, arrangements were made to hold the annual meeting 011 April 1, at 7.30 p.m. In order to raise funds, of which the league is most urgently in need, it was proposed to hold a mock banquet at the end of April. The occasion was the anniversary tea and concert. The tea was provided by the ladies of the Methodist Ladies' Social League, and was followed by the performance of a children's cantata, "Soot and the Fairies," under Mrs. John Sanderson and Miss M. Haddock. The report of the Sunday school showed a credit balance. The Rev. W. Gatman and the Rev. A. W. Silvester congratulated the Sunday school on the successful year's work. The prizes were presented by Mrs. Gatman. Each of the 31 members of Miss Cossey's kindergarten class received prizes. Other prizewinners were as follows —Miss H. The committee of the Opotiki D.H.S. Old Pupils' Association held a successful Hawaiian dance in the Farmers' social room on Saturday evening. There was an exceptionally large attendance. The room was beautifully decorated with palms and shaded lanterns, and Island mats and cushions were placed on the floor in place of chairs. The Semla Orchestra was in attendance, and gave several popular Hawaiian numbers. Many of the dancers were in costume, and a very pretty scene was presented.
